First Presbyterian Church of Meadville presents a concert of "biblical proportions" on Saturday, October 4, at 7:00 PM. The program consists of choral, handbell, and organ music inspired by the poetry of the Hebrew scriptures. Performers include the church's Chancel Choir, Liberty Bell Choir, Junior Choir, and Musica Divina Chamber Choir.
Sandra Wayman, a music student at Allegheny College, is the accompanist; Kevin Dill, First Presbyterian's Director of Music, will direct the ensembles. The selections in this concert represent five books of ancient Hebrew poetry that have inspired countless composers through the ages. The program includes varied settings from 16th century Europe to present-day America.
Major composers including William Byrd, Michael Haydn, and Felix Mendelssohn represent the Classical tradition, while John Rutter, Stephen Paulus, and Derek Hakes balance the program with present-day compositions.
All of the musicians taking part in this concert, totaling nearly 50 adults and children, make up the choirs that enhance weekly worship services at First Presbyterian. Both the church's 1894 Steinway grand piano and its 2500-pipe Schlicker organ will be featured. Admission is free. For further information contact the church office at 333-2161.
